The Two Week Wait (make that 2 weeks and 4 days)

I had another doctor's appointment today - they're now 2 weeks apart.  That seems really frequent compared to 4 weeks apart, but the 2 week wait still seems pretty long.  It's just really nice to hear the heartbeat and get reassurance that things seem to be going okay.

I am measuring ahead of schedule, and Dr. F says that's fine - she thinks a baby can never grow too much.  But she thinks that our baby is really TALL - while my belly's not that big from side to side, it's really long from top to bottom.  People say I'm carrying low, but this makes it sound like I'm carrying low, high, and everything in between!  Tall isn't a problem, she says, but the baby may start to get pretty cramped quarters and it means I'll probably get really uncomfortable as time goes on, especially if the baby ever decides to turn head-downwards and its feet are jammed way up in my ribs.  Right now, she thinks it's lying along the bottom of the uterus in kind of a U-shape.  He or she seems to be in no hurry to get in the proper birth position.

We talked about fetal movement.  This is the only thing that has really been making me nervous.  There just isn't a lot of consistency in how frequently and strongly I feel movement.  I'll go for a week where my belly is literally rippling before my eyes and bouncing around all day, and then a stretch of four days where I hardly feel anything and, when I do, it's subtle and in a very different location than it had been.  It's rather maddening because I never know when I should be worried.  If you notice a decrease in movement, you're supposed to eat or drink something sweet and sit or lie down for an hour.  If you feel at least 5 movements within that hour, everything is fine.  Lately my lazy little baby has been very still most of the day, but when I lie down after eating lunch, I feel plenty of movement, so I know the baby's okay then, but it still stresses me out.  The doctor took my concerns really seriously, though.  Her guess is that my baby is just 1) running out of space a bit, 2) changed to a position where movement is less noticeable, and 3) learning how to sleep.  Still, if I notice any less movement than I have been, she really wants me to come in so they can put me on a monitor to check everything out.  In the meantime, I have been eating a lot of sweet things - I know that's probably bad, but I really like chocolate and I think the baby really likes it, too, because it usually elicits some type of movement response.  :)

So - move, baby, move!  Move lots!  Today, happily, the baby has been moving a lot more than it has since Saturday.  Every time I feel good movement after a long lull, I talk to the baby and tell him or her that's good and I want him or her to do that all the time.  My child likes to cause me stress and worry even before it's born - I'm sure that will only get worse as he or she grows up.  :)

I especially like to play with our baby when he or she pokes a body part out and creates a hard little lump bumping out of my tummy; it's fun to press against it gently and have the baby respond by moving.  I love keeping my hands on my stomach and just being in awe of the fact that I'm really feeling my baby's body moving underneath all those layers of, well, me.  This does make it difficult when I wake up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, though.  Baby is often quite active when I lie back down, and I am so interested in keeping my hands on my stomach and feeling all the movements that I don't fall right back asleep like I probably should.

Our next doctor's appointment should have been on the 27th, but the time they had available was right in the middle of the day, which would not work out for us very well since Greg and I both work kind of far away.  So it's not going to be until Monday, January 31, which means it's actually a 2 week and 4 day wait until we get to see our baby.  (And it also means I won't have any fun 4D pictures to show off at my baby shower - but I'll be sure to put them up online as soon as I can!)

Yes, this is the much-anticipated 4D ultrasound.  I'm looking forward to it and hoping Baby is a photogenic mood so we can get a good sneak peek at him or her.  With this ultrasound, they'll do another basic anatomy check (no, we're still not finding out if it's a boy or girl), measure the fluid level, check the position, and compare the baby against a growth curve to predict approximately how big of a baby we're probably going to have.  (I warily asked the doctor if I was going to have a 10 pound baby, but she doesn't think that's very likely, thankfully!!)  Then we sit down and see if there are any concerns and make plans to address those.  According to one of my pregnancy books, by 33 weeks most (though, of course, not all) babies will have moved into the position that they will be in for delivery.  I'll be 33 weeks pregnant on January 30, so if the baby's position isn't head-down for the ultrasound, we'll probably talk about what will happen if Baby stubbornly refuses to change into that position over the remainder of the pegnancy (it would mean a C-section).

We were supposed to have our second (and final) labor and birth class on Tuesday, but it was canceled due to the weather, so we'll have it next Tuesday night instead.  We've also picked out a pediatrician based on a trusted friend's glowing recommendation, so now I need to get on the ball and pre-register our birth at the hospital!

Please pray that things continue to go smoothly with this pregnancy and with the baby.  I just want to make it through this winter (driving on snowy roads and walking on icy sidewalks is never fun, but especially not when you're 7 or 8 months pregnant) and have a healthy, happy baby to welcome as we turn the corner into spring.

March 20, my due date, is the first day of spring, after all!  Spring has always been my favorite season (probably because I dislike winter so passionately and spring heralds the end of winter), and this spring holds promise to be the best one ever!

30 weeks

30 weeks down . . . 10 to go.
What have we been up to lately?  Working on the nursery, for one thing.  You'll have to be patient for pictures, though . . . I want to get it a little more together before I share it!  I think it's super cute, though, and it's really a pleasant room, especially on a sunny winter day.  I think that Baby Mueller will like it, too.

Welcome 2011

2010 was a BIG year for Greg and I.  There was excitement, grief and heartache, big decisions to make, amazing new experiences and opportunities, living abroad, world travel . . . and we ended the year on a high note with our baby due to make its appearance in March 2011.  As big as 2010 was, 2011 looks to be even more of a landmark year.  In 2011, our lives are due to change completely as our family expands to three, and we're looking forward with hope to a wonderful year!

To follow up, yes, I did pass my glucose screen.  Yay!

Tonight we had our first labor and birth class (from 6-9 p.m.) with another one next Tuesday.  There were four other couples in the class with us who have due dates in early February, early March, April, and May.  (The couple due in May is really getting a head start on this, I guess!)  I definitely have the biggest belly of anyone in the class!  Well, the lady due in early February has a belly, but she's bigger overall, so maybe mine just looks bigger in proportion because I'm thinner otherwise.  The lady due in early March has just a tiny belly, even though she's due 2 or 3 weeks before me.  We are the only couple who does not know whether it's a boy or a girl (the nurse teaching the class was pretty excited about that - she says those births are always the most exciting to attend).  Today's class included general info, a video, and a tour of the childbirth center, which is pretty nice!  It's good to get a better idea of what happens when you check into the hospital and throughout the whole process.

Finally, I have to give a shout out to my sister, Shalimar, who made the most adorable baby shower invitations for the shower she's throwing for me on January 29.  Thanks, Shalimar; you're amazing!!!

156

That was baby's heartrate at my doctor's appointment this morning.  What a beautiful sound!

Some random tidbits from my appointment for anyone who's interested in keeping tabs on things:
  • I had my glucose screen.  Hopefully I passed it; we'll have to see when the bloodwork comes back.  I would prefer not to have to do the longer, yuckier glucose tolerance test if I fail this one.  Cross your fingers that there are no signs I might have gestational diabetes.  I missed the call-back and by the time I got their message the office was closed, so now I have to wait until Monday to find out.
  • Blood pressure: great, Weight: great ------ I asked Dr. Fenoughty how much more weight I'm probably going to gain, since I've already gained 35 pounds apparently (their scale had me at 158, although I feel like that might be high).  She said that women who start out lean like me almost always gain 40 to 50 pounds.  She thinks I'll probably gain 50 and that's fine (so there!).
  • This is for everyone who's been telling me how super huge I am: the doctor actually said that I'm little compared to most of her other patients around this time.  She did say I'm going to grow a lot more in this last trimester - straight out in front - so my shirts are going to start getting short and I'll probably be dealing with some lower back and hip pain.
  • She did talk about how I'm carrying the baby low (confirming what everyone else has been telling me).  I told her that everyone's been telling me it's a boy because I'm carrying low.  She kind of gave me an eye-rolling type of look and said it's 50/50; she thinks the way you carry really just depends on your body type and doesn't have anything to do with gender.
I go back in 2 weeks for another routine appointment, then 2 weeks after that we have our big fancy 4D ultrasound.  My doctor is really excited about it because she thinks we're going to get some awesome pictures.  :)

100th Post . . . Christmas Recap . . . 28 weeks

After a bit of hiatus from blogging during the past two busy weeks preparing for Christmas, I'm back with . . . (drumroll, please) . . .

My 100th Blog Post!

There is a lot to catch up on, so here's a recap of Christmas 2010.

The weekend before Christmas, Greg's parents and his sister's family were all in town for the Mueller Christmas.  Using training that I received over Thanksgiving, and under the watchful eye of my mother-in-law, I made yeast rolls for our big Christmas dinner.  The rolls were delicious, but Greg's mom told me that I failed the class because I slept through the final exam! (I fell asleep as the rolls were rising and she's the one who had to pop them in the oven and actually bake them.)  :)  A big thumbs up to Greg's brother Jeff and his fiancee Janelle for hosting the dinner and doing everything else.  We had a great time together and especially enjoyed spending time with our nephew, Jack, and our niece, Ellie.

Here's a teeny Mizzou T-shirt for Baby Mueller.
And Sherman (Jeff and Janelle's dog) in his new Mizzou sweater.
We spent this past weekend at my sister's house, playing games, going to the Christmas Eve service, and sharing gifts.  We got tons of baby gifts, which was really exciting.  In fact, I was so wrapped up in admiring my own presents after I opened them that I didn't pay much attention to other people's gift-opening.  (I kept saying, "When did you open that?  I didn't see that!")  Our baby gifts included the high chair that we wanted and some clothes and a shopping cart cover made with love by my crafty, newly seamstress-y sister, Shalimar.

My dad opening a webcam . . . so my parents can see their grandbaby through Skype whenever they want!

 Greg with his beer.

My sister ordered a calendar for my mother with pictures from their trip to visit us in Ireland.  I think she really liked it, don't you?
Shalimar's boyfriend, Bryan, was not expecting the camera to take this picture when it did.  His eyes are just too funny!
A beautiful scarf my sister bought for me on her recent trip to India.
Matching Colts socks for everyone in the Mueller family . . .

My sister made this bib-that-converts-to-a-potholder.  We thought it would be appropriate to put it on my belly.  I am stretching my head way up because I have suddenly developed a double chin.  (Seriously, it's terrifying.)
In pregnancy news, I am 28 weeks along today, marking the start of the 3rd trimester!  Can you believe it?

My stomach is growing rapidly (along with my chins) and I'm really starting to think that I'm going to outgrow a lot of my maternity clothes pretty soon here and have to buy Round 2 in a bigger size.  I've gained a solid 30 pounds.  A couple of people have commented that I look like I could have this baby any day now.  Uh, thanks a lot, people, I still have almost 3 months to go!  An unwelcome guest that's visited me a few times recently?  Painful leg cramps, ugh!  But I can't complain - this pregnancy has gone easy on me physically so far, so I'm sure I can suck it up and endure the discomfort that's sure to arrive these last few months.

I hope that all of my blog readers had a Merry Christmas!

Reindeer Games

Greg was sporting some awesome reindeer face painting at the children's Christmas party hosted by his work at a local community center last week.
Yesterday, we were driving along and saw a guy pull his car into the center turn lane, run quickly into the street to pick up something that had fallen from his car, and then run back into his car before the oncoming traffic could reach him.

It was a reindeer antler that had fallen from his car's passenger side window.  The poor car was almost doomed to endure the holidays with just one single antler, like the Grinch's dog, Max.
