Road Trip #1

This past weekend Davis had his first "road trip" - up to my parents' house, an hour and a half away.  That doesn't seem very far, but just a few short weeks ago it might as well have been ten hours.  We were anxious to see how Davis would do in the car for that long . . . and he did great!  He talked to himself for quite awhile and then fell asleep for another big chunk of the trip.  By the time he woke up and started to fuss a bit, we were almost there.  We even made it in time for church at 8:45 a.m.  Yay, us!  Davis LOVED looking around at the sanctuary and smiling at all the people.  This is the same church that I attended ever since before I was born, so there were a lot of people who were excited to meet our sweet boy.  Later in the day, we went to a family reunion for my dad's side of the family and he got to meet my aunt, uncle, and cousins.  Add in lots of cuddle time with Grammy, Grandad (Granddad?  I'm not sure how to spell it), and Aunt Shalimar, and you have a happy, spoiled baby.

In the rush to get out the door at 7:15 a.m., we forgot our camera, but we do have some other recent pictures to share.

Three Months . . . and Naps

As I begin typing this post, I'm sitting here on the couch listening to Davis suck his thumb/fingers on the baby monitor.  He's been up in his crib napping and, upon waking, has decided to soothe himself by sucking on his hand instead of crying.  I'm giving him a chance to fall back asleep - we'll see what happens.

On Tuesday, Davis took a super-long mid-day nap for over two hours.  I occasionally heard him stirring or fussing for a moment, only to peek in the door and see him industriously smacking on his thumb for a few minutes before falling to sleep again.

I have to say, thumb-sucking is cute on a three month old.  I want to take a picture, but it's dark in there and I know the flash would disturb him.

I'm glad that he's learning techniques to soothe himself and coming to realize that he doesn't always need my help to fall asleep, especially since I'll soon be transitioning him to his crib at night and will no longer be next to him to pat him and shush him back to sleep if he partially wakes in the night and fusses.

The nap situation has begun to improve greatly over the last few days . . . we'll see if the trend continues.  On Sunday, Davis fell asleep in his car seat after church and didn't wake up for over three hours.

!!!!!

This is a boy who usually naps for only 30 to 45 minutes at a time if you're lucky.  I should have taken a nap myself, but I kept thinking that he was going to wake up any moment.

He napped very well on Tuesday in his crib, as mentioned above, and yesterday he napped wonderfully at his babysitter's house, taking a one-hour nap in the morning, a one and a half hour nap in the afternoon, and some extra cat naps.

Just now I went upstairs to look in on him.  He had stopped sucking his thumb and was lying still in his crib, staring quietly into the distance.  After a few minutes, his eyes were closed.  Now he's sleeping peacefully.

I'm really happy about this as I was convinced that this baby boy would never learn to nap well outside of my arms, or to fall asleep without my assistance.  It may help that, since he goes to the babysitter a few days a week, he is becoming more accustomed to sleeping without mommy.

Anyway, let's hope that he continues to develop good nap habits and that eventually he falls into some type of nap schedule.  He is now sleeping well (6+ hours) most nights (7.5 hours solid last night, then another 2 hours after nursing for 30 minutes), which is wonderful, so naps are the next big thing to tackle.

In other news, our sweet Davis is now three months old.  He is such a joy.  Keeping his thumb in his mouth is definitely the new focus of his life.  He enjoys grabbing onto the toys that dangle from his play gym and mouthing them if possible.  He has begun to get startled occasionally by a sudden movement or noise and starts to cry.  The next big thing should be laughing.  He hasn't laughed out loud yet (at least while awake), and I keep tickling him and trying to elicit a laugh, but I guess I must not be very funny.  Some days I look at him and swear he got bigger overnight.  Most of his clothes now are in 6 month size.  We have just recently begun getting out of the house more with him - going grocery shopping, going to Chipotle to eat, even going down to Greenwood to the baby stores.  He enjoys looking around at the new environments and is such a good boy.  It's nice to begin recapturing a sense of normalcy.  He seems to be adjusting well to going to the babysitter's house on the days that I work, and while I miss him and look forward to the days I'm home, I enjoy my work and seeing my co-workers again.  We are going to get his first professional pictures taken this Saturday, so I hope he's feeling cute (he usually is), isn't cranky, and hasn't scratched his face up!  I am enjoying this age and also find myself flipping forward in the "baby's first year" books to see what exciting changes we can look forward to over the next few months.  It's so amazing watching him grow and change!

Checked again - still sleeping like a baby.  (Well, he is a baby, after all.)

In Case You Were Wondering

In case you were wondering, Davis has not slept through the night since my last post.  Apparently, I jinxed myself.  I am trying to be happy with the fact that he's been sleeping for three-hour periods; it sure beats getting up every hour.

In case you were wondering, Davis' newest trick is bringing his hands together in front of him and kind of twisting them together.  It is super cute.  He also very much enjoys sucking on his hands and making loud smacking sounds while doing so.  Drooling and blowing bubbles are also very popular activities.

In case you were wondering, I'm going back to work part-time next week.  Boy oh boy, did 12 weeks go by fast.  I am so thankful that my work is being accommodating and willing to work with me on my schedule.  This week, I'll work Monday afternoon, Wednesday morning, and then all day Friday.  Tuesday and Thursday I'll have full days of wonderful snuggle time with my favorite baby boy.  Yay!

In case you were wondering, Davis is still cute.  Here's the proof.
