Frequently Asked Questions

It's fun to tell people the "big news" . . . or to wait until they can't stand it anymore and ask you about it.  And it's entertaining to hear what they have to say and what questions they ask, because they are almost always the same!

1.  When are you due?  (obviously)
  • Sunday, March 20, 2011 is the big day.  You can follow the ticker at the top of my page and on the Lilypie tab of my Facebook page to track how far along I am in this pregnancy day by day.
2.  Oh, so-and-so from my family was born in March.  -and/or-  Maybe you'll have a St. Patrick's Day baby!
  • In our own families, my mom was born March 6, Greg's brother was born March 1, our nephew was born March 16, just to name a few of many . . . Everyone likes to share the March babies they know.  I think that people especially hone in on St. Patrick's Day because, you know, we were living in Ireland when we ordered this baby.
3.  Are you going to find out if it's a boy or a girl?
  • No; we want it to be a surprise!  I have always thought that the surprise just makes it more exciting.  It's interesting that almost every single person says "oh, good!" when we tell them that we're not going to find out.  I guess other people like surprises, too!
  • I have several theories about the advantages of not finding out.  1) You do not end up with a lot of gender-specific baby stuff, like pink car seats and only gender-specific baby blankets and newborn onesies.  This way you can reuse everything for future babies without feeling weird about putting your son in a pink flowered baby swing.  2)  If people know what you're having, they always want to buy cute boy clothes or cute girl clothes and you end up getting a lot of clothes you don't need at your baby shower instead of the things you actually do need.  It's harder to find really cute gender-neutral clothes, so my theory is that people will be more likely to buy you what you need/want/have registered for instead of the adorable clothes they can't resist.  4) Of course you just want your baby to be healthy.  But let's say deep down you're kind of hoping more for a boy.  When you find out it's a girl at your ultrasound, you might then feel the tiniest twinge of disappointment even though you don't want to.  But when your baby is newly born and they put her in your arms for the first time, you will fall so in love with her that you won't be able to imagine ever hoping that she would be a boy.  At least that's how I imagine it being.  :)
4.  How have you been feeling?
  • Not too bad at all.  The queasiness kicked in more around 8 weeks and has gotten better just recently.  I was able to avoid getting sick too often by lying around and trying the "mind over matter" technique.  I'm lucky not to be one of those women who ends up in the hospital with an IV because she's dehydrated from vomiting too much, or who has to take a medication for nausea.  I have only actually tossed my cookies about six or seven times with this pregnancy, mostly brought on by smelling the trash or the dishwasher (weird, I know).  I was so thankful when Greg came home since now I don't have to deal with taking out the trash anymore.  That really did me in.  Fatigue has certainly been doing a number on me, especially in the first couple of months and moreso again this week.  I also don't like when I have all the little pains, which I suppose are probably round ligament pain, because they are very disconcerting.    It's been harder for me to deal with the emotional stress of worrying and hoping everything's okay in there than it has been to deal with any physical symptoms.
I'm not in maternity clothes yet, although my awesome sister bought me some and we picked up a couple of shirts at the Motherhood Maternity store this week.  Right now I'm hoping to wait until after our next appointment in two weeks to pull out the maternity clothes.  I'm rubber-banding my pants because I can't button most of them anymore, and trying to find the few shirts I have that are long enough to pull down farther.

I really enjoy growing a little bump.  My co-workers actually cornered me and told me that they knew I was pregnant a few days before we were planning to tell anyone (we didn't tell people until about 13 weeks).  They had been harboring strong suspicions for several weeks already due to my noticeable pooch and some other signs they had been collecting; they finally brought it up one day when they had three different people ask them if I was pregnant.  Several people at work this week have come out and asked me if I'm expecting because of my belly.  I'm so thin and normally have such a flat stomach that it's really noticeable.  I work at a university, and a student passing me in the hall yesterday said I had a cute stomach.  Then she said, "You're pregnant, right?"  :)  I love looking pregnant (at this stage, anyway) and adore admiring my little baby bump in the mirror every chance I get.  My plan is to take a belly picture every 2 weeks and share them with you on here; we'll see if I stick with that plan or not.

So there you have it . . . the answers to a few frequently asked questions.
